    This teaching case focuses on a start-up company in the Web analytics and online advertising space, which faces a database scaling challenge. The case covers the rapidly emerging NoSQL database products that can be used to implement very large distributed databases. These are exciting times in the database marketplace, with a flock of new companies offering scalable database systems for the cloud. These products challenge the existing relational database vendors that have come to dominate the market.     Coordinating the Relationship between IT Services Providers and Clients: The Case of Cloud Computing

    The focus of this research is on the IT service relationships that exist between clients and providers in cloud computing. Cloud computing is an important context in IT services management since it has become an increasingly popular delivery model. We use coordination theory and a case study of a cloud computing-based company to investigate how cloud service relationships are managed. Evidence of both the standardized and customized relationships is based on a case study of SiteWit, a new startup company that is both a user and provider of cloud services. This company is an interesting case to study, given the real-time, intensive nature of the technical demands, the multiple service relationships that must be managed, while at the same time minimizing costs

    Data Visualization and Sonification for Financial Agent-Based Models

    The corporate bond market is one of the areas that has witnessed profound changes since the last financial crisis, prompting regulators (and industry participants) to question its resilience under stress. We are building agent-based models to better understand bond market dynamics using simulations. Simulations offer an intriguing method of capturing the second-order feedback loops that can affect prices under conditions of stress. However, understanding all the data and emergent behaviors from these complex systems remains a difficult challenge. In this paper, we begin investigating visualization and sonification techniques that might help us meet this challenge at both agent (micro) and system-wide (macro) levels, with the goal of assembling an effective mixture of visual elements. Sonification offers a novel way to enrich our visualizations with sound, setting markets to music. An experiment assessing the impact of mutual fund market share on bond market stability provides an interesting context with meaningful outcomes

    Fine-mapping identifies multiple prostate cancer risk loci at 5p15, one of which associates with TERT expression

    Associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at 5p15 and multiple cancer types have been reported. We have previously shown evidence for a strong association between prostate cancer (PrCa) risk and rs2242652 at 5p15, intronic in the telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) gene that encodes TERT. To comprehensively evaluate the association between genetic variation across this region and PrCa, we performed a fine-mapping analysis by genotyping 134 SNPs using a custom Illumina iSelect array or Sequenom MassArray iPlex, followed by imputation of 1094 SNPs in 22 301 PrCa cases and 22 320 controls in The PRACTICAL consortium. Multiple stepwise logistic regression analysis identified four signals in the promoter or intronic regions of TERT that independently associated with PrCa risk. Gene expression analysis of normal prostate tissue showed evidence that SNPs within one of these regions also associated with TERT expression, providing a potential mechanism for predisposition to disease

    On Spanish Dvandva and its restrictions

    As noted by Bauer, real dvandva compounds –that is, coordinative compounds that properly express the aggregation of two different entities, not the intersection of properties in one entity– are extremely rare in English or Spanish. This article explores the empirical domain of dvandva compounding in Spanish, and notes that they are productive when not used as heads within their phrases. We propose that the explanation for this is that Spanish can only productively build dvandva compounds using flat structures without internal hierarchy. This causes the compound to look externally for a head noun that defines the interpretation of the relation established between the two members of the dvandva. The proposal also explains why proper names is preferred in dvandva compounding, given that they do not denote properties
